Brief History of the College

Affilliated to Punjabi University, Patiala and situated in Sunam subdivision of Distt. Sangrur in the Malwa belt of Punjab, the college is serving the students of this area. The foundation stone of the college was laid by Honourable Sardar Gurnam Singh, the then Chief Minister of Punjab on 31st july,1969. The foundation day has a great significance as it is martrydom day of the worthy son of India, Shaheed Udham Singh who was born at Sunam. Hence, the college is named after this true son of India as Shaheed Udham Singh Memorial Degree College. The mortal remains of Shaheed Udham Singh were brought in 1974 under the worthy leadership of the then Chief Minister & former President of India, Giani Zail Singh who showered his blessings, by declaring the college being taken over by the Punjab Government. And, at that time, the name of the institution was changed to Shaheed Udham Singh Government College. Besides providing higher education, the college is equipping the rural population including especially female population with skills by starting courses like Diploma in computer hardware and Networking; Post graduate diploma in Dress Designing and Tailoring; Certificate, Diploma and Advanced diploma in Spoken English and Communication Skills, Fine Arts and Music. Along with the promotion of Punjabi language, inculcation of curricular & co-curricular activities are the main objectives of the college.
